Sputum Cytology is a test which is useful in finding out the presence of Lung Cancer.
Sputum Cytology is a test that determines the presence of cancer in lungs by testing sputum sample ie. the phlegm or secretions from lung to detect cancerous cells. This one is a cheap and quick test yet may not always give correct results. There is a possibility of getting a false negative (40%) ruling out cancer when it is present where as there are smaller chances of obtaining a false positive result (1%) indicating the presence of cancer in the lungs when it is not there. It is quite useful in knowing about squamous cell lung cancer that begins in the central airways yet may not be effective when it comes to other types of lung cancer that are spread on the other parts of the lungs.
